New documentary from the creators of Pond Hockey honors 1960 U.S. Olympic Hockey team

November 22nd, 2009

== OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE ==

NOVEMBER 23, 2009 – A new documentary film celebrates the gold medal run of the 1960 U.S. Olympic hockey team. Forgotten Miracle tells the story of the unheralded team’s unexpected first place triumph in the Squaw Valley games. The release coincides with the 50th anniversary of the VIII Winter Olympiad.

Featuring rare archival footage of the first televised Olympic Games, illustrated reenactments and interviews with team members, coaches and experts, Forgotten Miracle reveals the seldom-told tale of America’s “other” hockey gold medalists.

The feature-length film is directed by Tommy Haines and Andrew Sherburne, creators of Pond Hockey, a 2008 documentary illuminating the world of outdoor hockey. ESPN’s John Buccigross called Pond Hockey “the best and purest hockey movie ever.”

Forgotten Miracle features interviews with stars of the 1960 team, including coach Jack Riley, brothers Bill and Bob Cleary, defenseman John Mayasich, brothers Bill and Roger Christian and standout goalie Jack McCartan. Detailing the quiet rise of American hockey in the 1950s—a time dominated by the Canadian and the Soviet dynasties—through the 1960 Olympic triumph, the film reveals a lost chapter in America’s hockey history.

Forgotten Miracle is presented in association with USA Hockey, the national governing body for the sport of ice hockey in the United States.

2010 Winter Classic - Bruins vs Flyers in Fenway

July 16th, 2009

Nothing like outdoor hockey talk to take the edge off a hot summer day.

It’s official, Boston vs Philly at Fenway Park for the 2010 Winter Classic. We’ll be watching. Fenway will be a great location, it matches Wrigley for historic beauty and I’m excited to see what the league can dream up for the Green Monster.

We often get asked our opinion on the Winter Classic (seeing as we’re pseudo-”experts” on pond puck). Here’s what we usually say: it’s beautiful, we hope it snows, and why can’t we play more than one of these a year? Sure the novelty would be gone if we did, but hockey outdoors is something more people should get a chance to watch in person, and more players would love to be a part of.

Ok, so the reality is that this is a huge event for the NHL and it will only continue to be if its a once-a-year tradition (by the way, I hope somebody at NHL HQ got a promotion for making the Classic a reality). It’s a huge visibility boost for the league and it showcases hockey in a way that (sadly) the league’s indoor arenas just can’t.

More importantly, and I don’t think we’re the only ones that feel this way, nothing makes fans want to PLAY hockey like watching the NHL outside. These moments in televised sports aren’t as numerous as they should be. Watching sports should inspire us to play more, not watch more, eat more and drink more. That’s what the Winter Classic does for hockey. I’ve heard more non-hockey playing friends say that felt moved to skate on Jan. 1 of every year than at any other time.

Look, it’s mid-July and we’re already itching to lace up just talking about it. Winter can’t come soon enough.

Pond Hockey is Star Tribune’s Critic’s Choice

February 8th, 2009

The Star Tribune’s “Critic’s Choice” for this Tuesday is the airing of Pond Hockey on TPT (PBS - Twin Cities) at 8pm.

Most of America might not have much interest in a documentary called “Pond Hockey” (8 p.m., KTCA, Ch. 2), but then the rest of the country doesn’t appreciate the pure joy of skating across frozen water in subzero temperatures. Those in the know include a couple of Minnesota governors and a couple of hockey hacks named Wayne Gretzky and Neal Broten. by Neal Justin

JT Haines, co-producer of Pond Hockey, sits down with Cathy Wurzer and Eric Eskola of TPT’s Almanac to chat about the upcoming showing of Pond Hockey. To watch the interview visit the TPT website.
